It's good to know which markings are considered rare but acceptable. These can be anything from markings that look like certain shapes, to unusual markings that are odd to see in real life, to impossible markings or colours. More information on a lot of the following markings can be found here.

Odd White Markings

These are simply white markings that are theoretically possible in real life but would be unusual to see. Below are only examples - there will be other cases of this.

Skunk Stripe

Also known as 'Thai White Spotting'.

Banded

Sheeted

Swirled

Brindled Bicolour

Occurs due to a failure of red pigment in a tortoiseshell.

Roan

Also known as 'Tweed'. Can occur in any colour, but black is usually the most striking.

Karpati

Also known as 'Salt and Pepper'. A dominant mutation found in Eastern Europe that give a somewhat reverse colourpoint effect.

Finnish Mutation

Found in one cat from an inbred colony in Finland. Unfortunately, the one cat was also sterile.

Moscow Mutation

A black and white (not silver!) tabby style pattern found rarely in feral cats in Moscow.

Blue-ginger Tabby

Tan

A pattern that has not yet been seen in cats but some have theorised to be possible. The combination does not have to be just black and tan, but theoretically would be possible with any solid cat colour. Similar to tan patterns in dogs. Can be combined with white spotting.

Merle

A pattern that has not yet been seen in cats but some have theorised to be possible. The combination does not have to be just black and grey, but theoretically would be possible with any solid cat colour and it's equivalent dilution - so, for example, red on cream or lilac on chocolate. Similar to merle patterns in dogs. Can be combined with white spotting.

Shapes

Any markings that look like specific shapes - for example, a heart, moustache, or trousers.

Coloured Socks

Excluding colourpoint cats and tabbies with socks the same colour as their stripes.

Impossible

Any impossible markings and/or colour combinations as long as they still look somewhat natural.

Other

There are still certain colours and markings that require items to be bought, such as tortoiseshell/calico on a male cat. There are also certain colours and markings considered too outlandish to be allowed on the forum, like bright pink cats or cats with book pages written 'naturally' all over them. Generally if a picture of a cat would make you say, "is that real?" it's a rare pelt; if it would make you say, "that's 100% definitely photoshopped", it won't be allowed. If in doubt, feel free to ask a staff member beforehand.
