It was just a bit before dawn when Stormshriek peeked his head into the apprentice den and called Sappaw to follow him out into the forest. He kept his expression even more guarded than usual, but his mind was in turmoil, to say the least. She was so tiny and it scared him. Thankfully from what he'd seen, as a kit she'd seemed much calmer than her littermates. There would be no running into the dangerous open to be carried off by a larger predator. Well. He hoped not. It was easy enough for his older clanmates to deduce that his being entrusted with another apprentice made him nervous, but he hoped that she wouldn't see his unease written on his face or worse, someone had told her as such. The last one had turned out ok, but he still couldn't help but feel like he was going to fail as a mentor, a protector. Owlpaw's screams echoed once more, though only he could hear them. Poor girl.

As he stepped out into the forest, he automatically relaxed just a little now that he was away from the eyes of the rest of the Clan. He stopped just a short ways in; the entrance to camp would still be visible through the underbrush. There were still a few crickets chirping away, a sound he found strangely pleasant. Turning to his apprentice he solemnly asked, "What do you think it takes to be a warrior of OakClan?"

Sappaw had found moving to the Apprentices’ den to be a little uncomfortable than she was expecting. The Nursery had felt so cramped with how big all of her denmates had gotten over six moons, and Sappaw had been excited to finally have a nest to herself. She was close to the entrance, along an edge of the wall, but that wasn’t what bothered her. Somehow, it was much colder than she had thought it would be, and over the course of the night, the small she-cat found herself oddly missing her mother and brothers’ warmth.

Unexpected as her night, the morning came abruptly with the raspy voice of her new mentor as Stormshriek summoned her. With as close as she was, Sappaw wondered if the grey warrior could've picked her up out of her nest. She flushed with a frown at the thought, though she played it off with a yawn and weary blink of her eyes. Climbing out of her bedding, she scanned Stormshriek’s face and found that it was still as stiff as it had been when they had first been introduced. She figured it was because he was a warrior, and a senior one at that, but that didn’t matter to her. An older mentor meant a wiser one and Sappaw was plenty satisfied with her leader’s selection.

The little tabby had followed after the tom, moving thoughtfully as to keep up with him and his longer strides. She watched his back as they filed out through the bramble tunnel and into the vast green of the forest, noting how each of his battle-worn muscles moved and how rigid they still looked. It made her wonder if her body would someday look that way, though she shook the thought away as Stormshriek stopped and turned around to face her. One side of her brow quirked up as she noted how the greyed warrior’s shoulders seemed to sag and rest a bit.

He spoke in a soft voice that surprised her at first, though Sappaw respectfully ignored her idle musings to focus on his words instead. What do I think it takes to be a warrior of OakClan? Her brow furrowed in thought. Refocusing her attention back to Stormshriek, the she-cat evenly mewed, ”I think it takes a careful head.” She made a small face as if pausing for a moment to grab all her opinions on the matter at once before expanding upon her thoughts. ”Don’t the warriors in OakClan try to avoid fighting when they can? It has to take a lot of care to try and work out a problem without jumping to fighting.” She inwardly cringed at the brief thought of all the times her brothers tackled her over anything. Quickly recovering, the little tabby looked to her mentor expectantly, her brown eyes occasionally flashing amber in the brief sunlight dappling the canopy as she awaited his answer.

He would be lying if he said that he wasn't a bit taken aback by her answer. He'd expected a cat as young as her to excitedly proclaim "strength!" or perhaps even "loyalty!" A careful head... She was a smart one. He mulled over her words for a few moments in silence, pondering. "Yes, this is true. It's always ideal to avoid a fight whenever possible. The other Clans may try to spin this as weakness or fear, but that's simply not the case. It's difficult for even the most skilled warrior to leave a fight without injury which can put strain on the Clan as a whole. Injured cats need time to recover to their full capabilities, if they can at all. That means that the rest of your clanmates will have to pick up the slack while still having that extra mouth to feed." He kept his eyes on hers evenly as he spoke, trying to gauge her reaction to his words. Hopefully she was taking in everything he said. A hot-headed apprentice would likely grow bored from simply talking, but he wanted her to understand the whys and the hows before they started on any sort of practical work. "Unfortunately, talk will only get you so far. If I didn't know better, I'd say the other Clans like to fight just to say they can. A good OakClan warrior needs to know how to avoid fighting or injury both through their words and through their environment." He turned his gaze up towards the nearest tree. Looked like today would be a climbing lesson, though perhaps they would work on some form and technique later on.

"You have multiple brothers, correct? I've seen them tearing about the camp now and then. You're not usually with them, though. You've tended to hide yourself away, haven't you?" This was more of an observation than an actual question. He couldn't blame her; those littermates of hers were absolute terrors in his eyes. As someone who preferred to keep to himself, he could see why she'd hide away from them. "OakClan's territory is primarily made up of the forest. It would be foolish if we didn't use them to our advantage, particularly over enemies that might not be so familiar with the terrain. Tell me, Sappaw, have you ever tried to climb a tree?" He nodded towards the trunk, willing her to give it a go regardless of if she had experience climbing or not.

The tabby she-cat listened to the warrior intently, her face trained to look wherever his amber gaze trailed. Her posture seemed more poised and her ears were pricked as Sappaw inwardly beamed over the first part of her mentor’s explanation. I was right! With the exception of a tail twitch, however, the apprentice kept her composure. Stormshriek’s lesson was far too valuable to miss hearing.

His continuation made Sappaw’s giddiness drain away, the young cat’s jaw set and her brow knitted in a scowl. She mulled over the burdens and truth her mentor spoke of, knowing that the warrior code was hard to upkeep and their way of life was supposedly harsh. She had overheard warriors spilling their woes a time or two, but the reality in Stormshriek’s description of the event rattled Sappaw a bit. The dark tabby looked back to her mentor to save her from her thoughts and followed his eyes to the trees.

He then asked her about her family and Sappaw felt her shoulder slump a little, but she straightened them out as soon as she noticed. ”I have,” she offered in a small voice, burning holes into the tree bark with her embarrassed gaze. However, whether Stormshriek picked up on her state or purely by coincidence, the warrior continued on with his lesson as he reflected on their territory. The informative nature of the explanation helped Sappaw to recover only to send her doubling back by the smooth transition of her mentor’s words and a little tip of his grey head. Sappaw’s mouth felt dry as she struggled to find her words, and hung agape a little as she gawked upward. The trees of the forest seemed so big.

Sappaw had always liked the trees around camp; their roots provided cozy little nooks for her to hide and nap in, and made for prey homes outside camp. The branches and leaves kept them cool in the hot sun and protected them from the great water storms some of the elders had told her stories of. The tree was strong, but flexible, and had many uses. But none of that matter at the moment as the she-cat felt tinier than ever standing at the thick trunk of an oak.

Flicking her twinkling chestnut gaze back to search Stormshriek for any sign of additional notes or advice and finding none, the tabby apprentice resigned herself to the fate of her lesson. Sappaw gingerly scraped the barky roots of the tree with her thin claws as she hauled herself closer to the tree trunk. Reaching its surface, a ruddy paw braced against the bark, followed by another before her claws sunk deeply into the wood. Finding her leverage, Sappaw slowly began an inchworm routine upwards. After all, she would be able to better absorb her lesson this way, couldn’t she?

He couldn't help but be pleased with how focused she was on his lesson. Perhaps it was only her desire as a fresh apprentice to prove herself and she would become more lax in the coming moons as she became comfortable, but he was thankful to have her undivided attention right now.

He held back a chuckle as she followed his gaze to the trees and her composure slipped just a little, mouth hanging open ever so slightly. Stormshriek could still recall the feeling of facing up against a tree for the first time, too. Uncertainty, fear, but a thrill of excitement as well. Of course, he'd fallen his first time. His sister had managed to climb to the very top branches, then wailed until their mother hauled her back down. He pulled himself out of his thoughts just as Sappaw reached out to touch the bark of the tree, then slowly started her ascent. This time he didn't hold back his chuckle. With the grace of experience and well-trained muscles, he leapt onto the trunk beside her and rapidly hauled himself up to the lowest branch, then turned back to watch the young she-cat. Admittedly he could have given her some initial pointers, but he had wanted to see how well she fared in trying to figure things out on her own, first.

"Don't be afraid to make mistakes," he mewed. "The faster you move, the easier it will be on your claws. But if you fall, you can just try again." He hoped she wouldn't, at least not this first time. A tumble from this height wouldn't hurt anything but a young cat's ego and he didn't want her to become discouraged. Not so soon, anyway.

It had surprised Sappaw when Stormshriek practically glided past her, having hauled himself up in a fluid motion and earning a quick gasp of awe from the apprentice. She had paused for a brief moment, but long enough for her claws to ache and the dark tabby winced. Distracted by her pain, she had to raise her head to hear her mentor’s advice as he encouraged her from above. The faster I move, huh?

Sappaw grimaced as she moved to adjust her paws, tugging her embedded claws free and began to try and climb a bit quicker. From the elder tom’s tone, she could assume that she had the luxury to make a few attempts if it took her longer than normal to pick it up. The russet she-cat was at least happy to know she was pretty quick to pick things up. Though, that came to learning the technique, not practically application. Regardless, she steeled her nerves and scrambled up.

Her muscles screamed and felt like fire, but she panted contentedly as she draped herself along the low branch that Stormshriek sat upon, one thin leg hooked around an offshoot of the branch to brace herself. Chestnut eyes were glazed over from the exhaustion brought upon by the effort, but they also showed warmth and determination. Tilting her head to one side, she blinked at the warrior and croaked, ”How’d you know...fufu...where to put your paws? Some spots were too...ha..ha...hard for my claws to get into, but you nearly w-walked up here…”
