Deep down, he's pretty insecure, but refuses to let it show. He feels like if he shows his doubts and worries too much, he'll be looked down upon, ridiculed, and will become less trusted. As he grows to trust you, he will let you in a little bit, but no one truly knows how deep it goes except for himself. This leads him to sometimes be gruff and short, even to the point of being rude, and taking criticism especially hard. He will tend to keep to himself on bad days. On the contrary, if he's having a good day he will be generous and helpful.
He has a soft spot for his family, as he always wanted a family, and grows soft spots for certain cats who he sees that he might be able to help. For example, orphan kits, those new to the clan, etc.
